The town of Oberägeri
Things to do
Hiking (see below), snowshoeing, cross country skiing, stargazing, birdwatching, waterparks for the kids and nude sauna and spas for the adults, along with everything else that Switzerland has to offer (Continue...)
See more information about hiking below. This is an ideal place to go for hikes with a hiking post right outside. If there is snow then also good for snowshoeing and cross country sking and bit of downhill skiing. The town of Oberägeri has newly built facilities with a swimming pool, waterslides and a spa. If you want something even more elaborate or even more variety for your children then there is the Alpamare waterpark just over the hill. For adults we recommend the nude sauna landscape at the Swiss Holiday Park in Morschach. You can also just go to the lakes without having to pay an entrance fee or stay put at our place and enjoy what is the most unique thing about Switzerland, the proximity to the Alps.
What is near
The towns, places to hike, places to ski. (Continue...)
Oberägeri
Oberägeri is a town with about 5000 inhabitants. You can reach this atmospheric place in about 40 minutes by foot and 10 minutes by car. The town has plenty of facilities; swimming pools, restaurants, shops supermarkets, etc. Please note that on Sundays everything in Switzerland is closed, except restaurants and on some train station usually the bigger ones some shops. A recommodation is going to Ägeribad AG, a brand new swimming pool with one of the most awesome waterslides, wellness (massages and saunas) and a restaurant. Swim, relax and enjoy.
Unterägeri
Unterägeri is the next settlement that takes over where Oberägeri ends. It adds to your choice of restaurants and has a bit bigger supermarkets and other stores.
Mortgarten
One of the most historical places in Switzerland, Morgarten is in the other direction from Oberägeri. It is the village that can be seen when looking towards the Alps, see the image on top of this page. On the 15th of November, 1315 a battle took place in it's neighborhood that laid the foundation for the formation of the Swiss federation.
Sattle and Ratenpass
You can go hiking right from our place. Sattle and Ratenpass are in opposite directions to which you can hike or if there is snow these are good places for family skiing. Avid skiers might want to go further a field. The Sattle-Hochstuckli sometimes uses artifical snow to extend the skiing season. There are lots of other hiking destinations including the Wildspitz (there are actually two of them), Morgartenberg and Dreilanderecke (The point at which the cantons of Zug, Zurich and Schwyz meet.)
Einsideln
A lovely town with an old center, huge Monastery and huge ski jumping rams. Part of the town is next to the lovely but shallow lake called Shilsee. The river Shil runs from the Shilsee , parallel to Lake Zurich, flows underneath the Zurich rail station (and actually between the top and underground platforms) before it joins the Limmat which is the river that flows from Lake Zurich. The fact that it is possible to cross both this rivers as one, once they join up, may be the reason why Zurich became an early commercial town. Incidentally the Zurich rail station is the biggest rail station in Europe.
Alpthal and Mythen
The greater Mythen is a very popular mountain to hike by the Swiss people. Hiking on this mountain requires
The cities
It is possible to take round trips to most destinations without having to take a longer route back (Continue...)
Zug / Baar
Nice city by the lake with it's old down and a couple of newer taller buildings. One of the financial centers of Switzerland. Less than 30 minute drive from our place.
Zurich
The Center of everything except the government which resides in Bern. Geneva and Zurich are especially welcoming to the rich people of this world and their entourage. For ordinary people it is nice to stroll in the old town, by the main lake or the main river. Zurich is just one hour away.
Lucerne
Possibly the most picturesque city of Switzerland with the lake and snow caped (in winter) mountains viewable in the same direction from the promenade. For us living here it is not such a big deal as we too have a simultaneous lake and mountain view (in fact Alp view which tends to have the Alps snow capped the whole year round). Like Zurich, Lucerne is also just one hour drive away (but in a different direction).
Interlaken
Has an Alp view like we do. It takes little under two hours to get there. Not worth it unless you are planning some activity such as skydiving or going up into the Alps.
Hiking
There is a hiking post right outside. You can stroll along the road, hikde down to the lake, hike on top of the local mountains or drive a little bit to hike nice peaks such as the Great Mythen or the Klein Ausbrig. Along the way you have great views and you sometimes come across small waterfalls.
This is area is also loved by bikers who like the curves and altitude difference. There is also a bit of a flat area nearby the Rothenthurm High Moor Preserve. Routes for motorbikes, ebikes, streetbikes, as well as challenging mountain bike trails.
Ägerisee
From Backpackers Casa you can walk down to Lake Ägeri. The deep blue Ägerisee lies amidst rolling hills and has a circumference of 15.2 km. It's easy to discover on foot or by bike. The special highlight include the Ägerisee boat trip which you can take in the summer. See for yourself, you won't be able to escape the charm of Lake Ägeri.
